Sports/Recreation Safety
Safety precautions are just like conditioning and proper equipment to help your kids from sitting on the sidelines.
Before the game:
- Before beginning any sport, children should have a general health exam as well as an orthopedic exam.
- You should find out all you can of the coach who is watching your child. Is he/she state or nationally approved to coach the sport? Is he/she CPR certified? Is a first aid kit ready and available at all times? Is a certified athletic trainer available for instruction and rehabilitation?
- Children should be not only physically conditioned for the sport, but psychologically as well. They should be matched up with kids of the same skill level, weight and maturity.
- Check out the field that they are playing on for hazards such as rocks, holes, water, etc.
- Make sure they always have on their proper safety equipment, and that it fits properly.
- Make sure the children both warm up and cool down after the sport with stretching routines.
During the game:
- Make sure that there is non-stop supervision for the children, and that safety rules are always being used.
- Make sure that the children are adequately drinking liquids prior, during, and after the sporting events.
- All adults, parents, and coaches should be role models by practicing good sportsmanship.
- Make sure that your child is prepared for an emergency by providing them with information readily available such as parents’ names, addresses, phone numbers, and any allergic or medical conditions they may have. Keep this in the child’s backpack.
